My Philosophy of Education
I. INTRODUCTION
Philosophy originated from the Greek word “philosophia” which means love of wisdom, while Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. These two words are directly related to the fields of teaching for it provides educators with framework for planning, implementing and evaluating the schools. It also provides the starting point and will be used for the succeeding decision making.
In every profession, stating their philosophies is very substantial for it will be their guide in the pathway of their career or mission to take in life. Just like in the field of teaching, there are many philosophies banked in the books and in real experiences but it is only the “individual” perse that can identify what philosophy he wants to have in life.
II. MY PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATION
I was able to identify my own philosophy in education by the use of the survey form. From that form I was able to prove myself that I am a Progressivist. Even before I enter the world of education, I had series of seminars and lectures attended to and sometimes being a speaker. During those days, my only goals were to deliver my speech and to listen and participate. But now that I already knew what is my philosophy in teaching I can hardly say that in the world of Progressivism it is “change” that signifies all. Progressivism is also termed as Pragmatism and Experimentalism. As what the words implies being a progressivist means being practical and experimental. My aim is to promote democratic and social living. Knowledge leads to growth and development of lifelong learners who actively learn by doing.
My first profession as a Registered Nurse did not stop me of exploring the world of Teaching. From being a nurse wherein my being progressivist were also applicable by means of “hands-on-minds-on-hearts-on”. And I also believed that as an educator I can expand my passion of showing change to learners is inevitable.
III. WHAT TO TEACH
It is noted that the progressivists is a need-based which means that responding to the learner’s need. The teachers of this philosophy are more concerned with teaching the learners the skills to cope with change. The subjects most likely to include are natural and social sciences.
Teachers also teach students to solve problems in the classroom similar to those they will encounter outside the school. Independency and the will to cope up play certain parts also.
IV. WHY TO TEACH
Progressivist teachers teach to develop learners of becoming rational, knowledgeable, logical and intellectual.
V. HOW TO TEACH
One of the four pillars of education supports the philosophy of progressivism. It is the Learning by Doing. It is our experience who teaches us with the real lesson in life. Books cannot state all unless you do it.
VI. I AM A TEACHER
I would like to identify myself as a Nurse-Teacher. I cannot take away my first profession for the reason that it initiates my will that I also want to be a teacher or an educator. I know that there is a term as being a Nurse Educator but to formally address myself I wanted to be called as Nurse-Teacher.
These two professions involve passion, will and heart of doing the duties and responsibilities.
My patient is similar to my learners and vice versa. They bought need my expertise to help them grow and develop in whatever aspect in their life they will encounter me.
I am their Nurse-Teacher, who will always care and educate in whatever changes life may bring.
As one of my advocacy is to share my knowledge to those who are prepared to and willing to accept what can I contribute in their life.
